Mother Language Walk 2023

Canberrans are invited to join in a Language Walk to mark the UNESCO-designated International Mother Language Day.

Please join us on Sunday morning February 26th to celebrate Australia’s diversity of languages and cultures!

Come along in your community’s national costume or come as you are.  Just make sure you don’t miss it!

There will be free T-shirts and linguistically designed masks for everyone while they last.

PROGRAM

  • The day starts near the International Flags Display (behind Questacon car park) on Lake Burley Griffin just before 10.00am.
  • There will then be a community Language Walk at 10.30am across the Kings Ave bridge and around the lake to near the National Police Memorial in Kings Park.

Celebrate Canberra’s many languages and cultures at the end of the walk.

Parking is available at the program start near Questacon.

We will maintain the COVID compliance; hand sanitisers and masks will be provided. There will be free sausage sizzle at the end point until last.

Mother Language Walk 2020

Please join us on Sunday midday February 23rd in the National Multicultural Festival 2020, celebrating Australia’s diversity of languages at the Festival and celebrate the International Mother Language Day 2020.

There will be  kids activities and bag with freebies for early comers! Come along in your community’s national costume or come as you are.  Just make sure you join the crowd!

PROGRAM

  • The Walk starts near the Stage – 6 and the route will be via Petrie Plaza –  City Walk – Akuna St. – Glebe Park.
  • Celebrate Canberra’s many languages and cultures at the end of the walk.

Please join us on Sunday afternoon February 25th for a fun day in the sun, celebrating Australia’s diversity of languages and cultures!

There will be a sausage sizzle, kids activities and a free T’shirt* for early comers! Come along in your community’s national costume or come as you are.  Just make sure you don’t miss it!

PROGRAM

  • The day starts near the International Flags Display (behind Questacon car park) on Lake Burley Griffin just before 3.30pm
  • There will then be a community Language Walk at 4pm across the bridge and around the lake to near Police Memorial in King Park

Mother Language Walk 2016

Please join us on Sunday February 21st for a fun day in the sun, celebrating Australia’s diversity of languages and cultures!

We have a packed program with a bunch of Australia’s finest singers, rappers, traditional dances, African drummers, poets and more from across all walks of our community.

There will be a sausage sizzle, jumping castle, face-hena painting and a free T’shirt* for early comers! Come along in your community’s national costume or come as you are.  Just make sure you don’t miss it!

PROGRAM

  • The day starts near the International Flags Display (behind Questacon car park) on Lake Burley Griffin just before 10.30am
  • There will then be a community Language Walk at 11am across the bridge and around the lake to Stage 88 in Commonwealth Park (near Regatta Point).
  • With a warm up band performing from 11am, the main Cultural Performance Program will formally commence on Stage 88 from 11.50am and conclude around 1.30pm.

Parking is available at the program start near Questacon. Near Stage 88 you can park off Barrine Drive either near Regatta Place or on the West side of the Bridge (usual Floriade parking places). You could also park near Allara St in Civic and walk across to Commonwealth Park and Stage 88.

Mother Language Walk 2015

The second annual Mother Language Walk will be held in Canberra. There will be lots of free fun kids’ activities, multilingual activities (writing names in different languages and cultural performances). This IMLM walk will start at the International Flag Display at 10.30am on Friday 21st and will end near the Regatta Point.

Planning Workshop

As part of the initial planning phase, we have planned to organise a workshop to share backgrounds, goals, thoughts, pathways, roles, process and programs among our peer Australian communities and peak organisations.  This workshop is the first of many to assist all of us to come up with a collective approach and support structure to successfully implement the IMLM initiatives.
